Why convert PDF to TXT?

Scanned PDFs often contain only pictures of pages, so their text cannot be selected, searched or copied into another document. ToolGPT reads up to 20 pages per request, and asking for paragraphs joins the lines so the text pastes neatly into a document.

How ToolGPT reads the text

Recognition runs in your browser with Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine, so the PDF is not sent to an OCR service. So that the assistant can answer questions about the result, the first 2,000 characters of the recognized text are shared with the AI in your chat.

It reads printed English text. Handwriting, other languages and very small or blurry text come out poorly or not at all. It reads at most 20 pages or photos at a time, so for a longer PDF ToolGPT asks which pages you need.

About PDF

PDF, the Portable Document Format created by Adobe, keeps a document's layout, fonts and images the same on every screen and printer. It is the usual format for forms, contracts, invoices, manuals and scanned papers. PDFs are hard to edit, and a scanned PDF often holds only pictures of pages, so its text cannot be selected or searched.

About TXT

TXT is a plain text file: just characters, with no fonts, images or formatting. Every computer, phone and text editor can open it, and its contents paste cleanly into documents, emails and other programs. It cannot keep layout such as columns, tables or bold text.

Frequently asked questions

Which languages does it read?

English only for now. Text in other languages is not recognized reliably.

Can it read handwriting?

No. It is made for printed text such as documents, screenshots and signs.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF stays in your browser. Part of the recognized text is shared with the AI assistant so it can answer questions about it.
