Why convert PNG to TXT?
Screenshots of error messages, slides, web pages and chats hold text you often need to paste somewhere else. Screenshots are usually sharp and upright, which is exactly what the English-only text recognition reads best.
Attach your PNG file, such as a scan, a screenshot or a photo of a page, and ask ToolGPT what it says. It reads the text in your browser and gives you a .txt file to copy from or download.
Open ToolGPT and press the + button beside the message box, or drop the file into the chat. No account is needed to start.
Type “Extract the text” or “What does this say?”.
The text arrives as a .txt file in the chat, ready to download, paste and edit.

Recognition runs in your browser with Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine, so the PNG is not sent to an OCR service. So that the assistant can answer questions about the result, the first 2,000 characters of the recognized text are shared with the AI in your chat.
It reads printed English text. Handwriting, other languages and very small or blurry text come out poorly or not at all. It reads at most 20 pages or photos at a time, so for a longer PDF ToolGPT asks which pages you need.
PNG is a lossless image format widely used for screenshots, logos, icons and graphics that contain text. It keeps every pixel exact and supports transparent backgrounds. For photographs, though, a PNG is usually much larger than a JPG of the same picture.
TXT is a plain text file: just characters, with no fonts, images or formatting. Every computer, phone and text editor can open it, and its contents paste cleanly into documents, emails and other programs. It cannot keep layout such as columns, tables or bold text.
English only for now. Text in other languages is not recognized reliably.
