ToolGPT

Compress a video for wherever it's going

"Too large to send" is the most common thing people want fixed about a video. Attach it to ToolGPT, say where it needs to go, and the assistant proposes a plan based on your file's real bitrate and resolution — you press Start compression, and the smaller copy is made in your browser.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach your file

Open ToolGPT and press the + button beside the message box, or drop the file into the chat. No account is needed to start.

  2. 2

    Review the plan

Say where the video is going or how small it should be. ToolGPT shows a compression plan — the target bitrate, resolution and format — with a Start compression button.

  3. 3

    Start and download

Press Start compression. When the job finishes, download the smaller file from the result card. The original stays untouched.

A plan you can check before anything runs

Compression is a trade: a smaller file means lower quality somewhere. So instead of silently picking numbers, ToolGPT lays out what it intends to do — the bitrate it will aim for, whether it will reduce the resolution, the output format — and waits for you to press Start compression. If you would rather keep full resolution and accept a larger file, say so and it revises the plan.

The plan is based on your file, not on a generic preset. The assistant reads the video's current bitrate and dimensions first, and always aims below the current bitrate, because a target at or above it cannot make the file any smaller.

It tells you when compression won't help

Some videos are already efficiently compressed — many phone recordings and files downloaded from streaming sites are. Re-encoding those can produce a file that is barely smaller, or even larger. When that happens ToolGPT refuses and explains why instead of handing you a bigger file labelled "compressed". It can then suggest what will actually help, such as lowering the resolution or trimming the clip first.

Compressed on your device

The encoding runs in your browser, so the video is not uploaded to a compression server. That makes it a good fit for private recordings. The time it takes depends on your device and the length of the video; the job shows its progress in the chat and in the queue, and you can cancel it at any point.

Compression can be combined with other steps. "Trim the first 30 seconds and then compress it for email" becomes a short workflow you review once and run with one press.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my video get?

It depends on how the video was recorded. ToolGPT shows the settings before it starts, and if your file is already efficiently compressed it says so rather than making it bigger.

Which formats can the compressed video be?

MP4, MOV, WEBM or MKV. MP4 is the usual choice because it plays almost everywhere.

Is the video uploaded to a server?

No. Compression runs in your browser; only your chat messages and basic file details go to the assistant.
