ToolGPT

Compress images to a smaller file size

Attach one photo or a whole batch, say how much smaller they need to be, and ToolGPT shows what each compression level would give for your own pictures. Pick one and the smaller copies are made in your browser, ready to download.

What it can do

  • Up to four compression levels

Recommended, Small file, High quality and Smallest, each with a size worked out from your own photos. A level that would not help is left off.

  • A target size for one photo

Name a limit such as 200 KB. ToolGPT lowers the quality step by step until the photo fits, or tells you the smallest size it reached.

  • JPEG or WEBP output

Compressed photos are written as JPEG by default, or as WEBP, which is usually smaller at the same quality.

  • Fewer pixels when needed

Reduce the dimensions to 75%, 50% or 25% in the same step when lower quality alone is not enough.

  • Whole batches

Attach several photos and ask once. The same settings apply to each one, and every photo comes back as its own file.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach your photos

Press the + button beside the message box, or drop JPEG, PNG or WEBP images into the chat. You can start without an account.

  2. 2

    Choose a level

Ask ToolGPT to compress them. A card shows the levels that would help, each with a size for your files; tap the one you want.

  3. 3

    Download the smaller files

Each compressed photo appears in the chat as a new file with a download button. Your originals are not changed.

How the size estimate works

For most JPEG and PNG photos, each level on the card shows a size it will not go over, rather than a guess at the exact result. When ToolGPT cannot tell how compressed a photo already is, as with WEBP, the card says the figure is an estimate. How much a photo shrinks depends on the picture itself, so the real file usually lands below the figure shown.

A photo that was already saved at low quality may not get smaller at a gentle level. ToolGPT leaves that level out, or reports that the file did not shrink, instead of handing back a file that is no lighter. A harder level or fewer pixels will usually help.

PNG, transparency and photo details

Compression writes JPEG or WEBP, because those formats can trade a little quality for a much smaller file. A PNG you compress comes back in one of them. JPEG has no transparency, so see-through areas turn white. A logo with a see-through background is safer made smaller by resizing it, which keeps it a PNG.

The compressed copy is drawn from scratch, so details stored inside the original, such as the camera model or GPS location, are not carried into the new file.

Compressed on your device

The work happens in your browser, and your photos are not sent anywhere to be shrunk. The chat assistant works from basic facts such as file names, sizes and dimensions. Photos up to 8,000 pixels on each side are supported.

Frequently asked questions

Will compression lower the quality?

Somewhat. Every level re-encodes the photo. High quality keeps the most detail and Smallest gives up the most; the sizes on the card help you choose.

Can I compress a PNG and keep it as a PNG?

Not with compression, which writes JPEG or WEBP. To make a PNG lighter while keeping the format, resize it to fewer pixels.

Can I set a target size for many photos at once?

No. A target size works on one photo at a time. For a batch, choose one of the levels on the card.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Compression runs in your browser.
