Compress WEBP images and keep them WEBP

WEBP is already a compact image format, so getting more out of it takes care. Attach your WEBP files, ask ToolGPT to make them smaller, and say "keep them WEBP" if the format matters to you. The new files are made in your browser.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach the WEBP files

Add one image or several with the + button. The same settings are used for each one.

  2. 2

    Ask for WEBP output

Say you want them to stay WEBP. ToolGPT shows up to four options, each with an estimated size for your images. Without that request, the options are JPEG.

  3. 3

    Download the smaller files

Tap an option. Each image comes back as a new file, and the originals are not changed.

Say which format you want back

Photo compression writes JPEG unless you ask for something else. For a WEBP image that is often not what you want, so say "keep it as WEBP" or "compress to WEBP", and the options are worked out for WEBP output.

There are good reasons to switch, too. Some older programs and upload forms do not accept WEBP, and a JPEG opens almost anywhere. The JPEG still has to come out smaller than your WEBP, or ToolGPT reports that it did not. JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become white.

Estimates for an image that is already compressed

ToolGPT can read the quality a JPEG was saved at, but not the quality of a WEBP. Its estimates for WEBP are therefore approximate, based on an assumed starting quality. An image saved at a high quality may shrink more than shown, and one that was already compressed hard may not shrink at all.

Whatever the estimate says, the result is checked. If a compressed image does not come out smaller than the original, ToolGPT reports it rather than giving you a file that saves nothing. The next step is then a stronger option, or fewer pixels: the options can be shown again at 75%, 50% or 25% of the original size.

Frequently asked questions

Will my WEBP stay a WEBP?

Only if you ask. The compression options are JPEG by default, so say you want WEBP output.

Can I compress a WEBP to a set size?

Yes, one image at a time. Name the size, and ToolGPT tries lower and lower quality settings until the file fits, or reports the smallest file it managed.

Does compression remove image metadata?

Yes. Details stored inside the file are removed when the image is re-encoded.

Are my images uploaded?

No. They are compressed in your browser.
