Compress MOV videos and choose what they become

MOV is the format iPhones and Macs save video in, and a few minutes of it can fill an email or a shared folder. Attach the MOV to ToolGPT, say how small it should be, and decide whether the smaller copy stays a MOV or becomes an MP4.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach the MOV

Drop the file into the chat or press the + button. No account is needed to begin.

  2. 2

Choose the size and the format

Say how small it should be, and add "as MP4" if you want a different format. The plan shows the estimated size, resolution, format and frame rate.

  3. 3

    Start compression and save

Press Start compression. When it finishes, save the new file with the download button on its card. Your MOV is left as it was.

MOV in, MOV out, unless you ask

By default ToolGPT keeps the container you gave it, so a MOV comes back as a MOV. Inside, the video is encoded as H.264 and the sound as AAC. The plan names this as "MOV · H.264", so you know what you will get before you start.

If the file is going to someone on Windows or Android, or to a website's upload form, an MP4 is often the simpler choice. Say "compress it as an MP4" and the plan changes to MP4 with the same codecs. WEBM and MKV are also available.

Why phone videos are large, and what can change

A phone records at a high bitrate and often in 4K, so a short clip can take hundreds of megabytes. The plan aims for a lower bitrate than the original. For a large cut, it may also propose a smaller resolution, such as 1080p from 4K, or a lower frame rate. Each of these is a row on the plan, and you can ask to change any of them before you press Start.

Many recent iPhone videos are saved in HEVC, which is already efficient. If the plan could not make such a file at least 5% smaller, ToolGPT says so instead of producing a larger copy.

Compressed on your own device

The work runs in your browser, using its built-in video encoder where possible and a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg otherwise. A long 4K MOV takes longer on an older computer. A progress bar in the chat tracks the job, and you can stop it if you change your mind.

Frequently asked questions

Will a compressed MOV still open on my Mac?

Yes. It is a standard MOV with H.264 video and AAC audio, which QuickTime Player opens.

Can I turn the MOV into an MP4 at the same time?

Yes. Ask for MP4 in the same message, and the plan shows MP4 as the format.

Does compression shorten the video?

No. The whole video is kept, with its sound. To cut parts out, ask ToolGPT to trim it first, then compress the result.

Is the MOV sent to a server to be compressed?

No. The compression happens in your browser, so the file stays on your device.
